President's Update

With almost two months since my last Update, I’m sure most of you have been eagerly sitting on the edge of your chair waiting for another Update.

More realistically, if you are like me, you have been amazed at how fast this summer has gone by. The last two months have been a blur as my travels have taken me into many places and into many different and fascinating projects.

Here is a quick update of what has been happening.

ISRAEL STUDY TRIP

What a joy it was to go back to the Holy Land and spend two weeks taking a course of the “Context of Jesus times”... studying under a Rabbi, learning from a leading archeological expert, and hiking 6-8 miles every day seeing “out of the way” sights I’ve never seen before. Some of the adventures included:

  • • Hiking down the front of Mt Arbel with a couple of people who were afraid of heights.
  • • Walking on what many believe to be the Emmaus road and having an hour to just reflect on what Jesus could have told the disciples that day.
  • • Spending eight hours in the heat (111 degrees at its hottest) hiking up and down Gamla… seeing the place where the last Galilean revolt was staged and over 4000 Jewish people jumped off the cliffs... (throwing their children over) before they would surrender to the Romans.
  • Visiting a 500 acre restored Biblical farm and learning about biblical harvesting, farming and ranching... plus having a lot of hands-on-experience trying to herd sheep and goats, harvest grain, grind wheat etc.
  • • Meeting with several young leaders and discussing what God is doing in fulfilling Isaiah 19:18-25 and praying that the Lord would use us in some way to be a part of fulfilling these prophecies.
  • • Living in the Old City of Jerusalem, and having multiple experiences of listening to the many languages spoken and seeing the multitudes crowd the streets.
  • • Walking the walls of the Old City in it’s entirety and looking down at Jerusalem from the city walls
  • • Piecing together so many passages of scriptures that now have so much more meaning for me.

CANADA STAFF CONFERENCE

For nine days I worked with Power to Change Ministries (the new name of the Crusade organization in Canada).
Apologetically they put me through a schedule that was exhausting and exhilarating at the same time.
My schedule included:
Days 1-3 Trained all the Campus staff in the Life of Christ training
Day 4 Produced 15 two-minute video clips to introduce some new web training
Day 5-6 Spoke twice at a Donor’s retreat and saw God do a major miracle
Day 7 Spoke at their Leader Impact team meeting
Day 8-9 Spoke twice at their National Staff Gathering in Whistler along with Erwin McManus
AN OPEN SCHEDULE AHEAD
I have worked hard to keep my calendar for this Fall fairly clear of travels. So beginning the first of September, I have about four months primarily at home. My plan is clear… to use this extended time to relaunch Sonlife Classic, develop some new training resources, and begin to multiply the training in North America again. I’d really appreciate your prayers as I begin these projects! I believe they are going to have major impact over the next 10 years as we reach out to that next generation of young leaders.

PRAYER REQUESTS
  • • Training the leadership team of a church in Florida this weekend
  • • Training 60-80 staff from a large church in Indiana next month
  • • Developing with Mark Edwards our first 10 leadership pod casts on September 8 and 11th
  • • Launching our new Sonlife Classic website this next month along with online training resources
  • • Meeting with my 2:6 Group of 16 youth pastors from across the region

ON A LIGHTER SIDE

After a church service on Sunday morning, a young boy suddenly announced to his mother, "Mom, I've decided to become a minister when I grow up." "That's okay with us, but what made you decide that?" "Well," said the little boy, "I have to go to church on Sunday anyway, and I figure it will be more fun to stand up and yell, than to sit and listen."

A little girl became restless as the preacher's sermon dragged on and on. Finally, she leaned over to her mother and whispered,
"Mommy, if we give him the money now, will he let us go.”

After the christening of his baby brother in church, little Johnny sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car........ His father asked him three times what was wrong. Finally, the boy replied, "That priest said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home, and I want to stay with you guys!"

A little girl was sitting on her grandfather's lap as he read her a bedtime story.
From time to time, she would take her eyes off the book and reach up to touch his wrinkled cheek. She was
alternately stroking her own cheek, then his again.
Finally she spoke up, "Grandpa, did God make you?"
"Yes, sweetheart," he answered, "God made me a long time ago."
"Oh," she paused, "grandpa, did God make me too?"
"Yes, indeed, honey," he said, "God made you just a little while ago."
Feeling their respective faces again, she observed, "God's getting better at it, isn't he ?"

While driving in Pennsylvania , a family caught up to an Amish carriage. The owner of the carriage obviously had a sense of humor, because attached to the back of the carriage was a hand printed sign... 'Energy efficient vehicle: Runs on oats and grass. Caution: Do not step in exhaust.'

A minister waited in line to have his car filled with gas just before a long holiday weekend. The attendant worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of him. Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump.
'Reverend,' said the young man, 'I'm so sorry about the delay. It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip.'
The minister chuckled, 'I know what you mean. It's the same in my business.'

The irate customer calling the newspaper office loudly demanded to know where her Sunday edition was. "Ma'am," said the employee, "today is Saturday. The Sunday paper is not delivered until Sunday." There was a long pause on the other end of the phone, followed by a ray of recognition. "I'll bet that's why no one was in church today t

Some folks have trouble with all those 'shalls' and 'shall nots' in the Ten Commandments. They just ain't used to talkin' in those terms.
